An English woman was murdered by pirates for her rings at Lovis Cove — and her screams are said to return across the water every year on the night.

The small stony cove off Front Street is properly called Lovis Cove, but in Marblehead everyone says Screeching Lady Beach. The legend was written down as early as the seventeenth century and passed down through the fishing families: pirates took a ship off the coast, killed the crew and brought ashore the only survivor, an English woman in silk. She refused to give up her jewellery, and they killed her on the shingle. The whole town heard her screams and nobody dared go down. Ever since, tradition holds, the screams return across the cove each year on the anniversary — clearly enough that people have turned back up on Front Street. There are still Marbleheaders who will not walk down to the rocks after dark.
