Turner Hill

Massachusetts · United States · Manor

At the hilltop estate, staff and guests keep meeting Mrs Rice — the same woman, the same house, in accounts spanning decades.

Turner Hill is an English-style country estate on a rise just outside Ipswich, built in stone around 1900 and surrounded by formal gardens. The figure attached to the house is known simply as Mrs Rice, after the family who lived there. According to Ipswich's local history compilations she has been seen on several separate occasions and by different people, always inside the main house and always briefly — someone crossing a doorway, or standing in a room that ought to be empty. The estate is used today for weddings and conferences, which means a great many people pass through the building, and the accounts of her have kept arriving.
