Dixie V Counts is buried in this West Virginia hollow beside her stillborn son Charlie. Both died during the labour.
Dixie V Counts is buried in Spry Cemetery at Dry Branch Hollow near Harts, West Virginia, beside her infant son. His name was Charlie and he was stillborn. Both of them died during the labour.
The tradition holds that on a full moon the dates on the stone can be read clearly, and that Dixie can be seen rocking her baby. Both are described in white gowns, and both are described crying.
That is not a frightening story and it is not told as one locally. It is a mother and a child who did not survive a birth, in a hollow where the nearest doctor would have been a long way off, and the people who tell it are describing her still holding him.
A separate legend attaches to the same area, concerning a man who is said to have met the devil there.
The cemetery is small, rural, and belongs to the families in it.
