In the early 1980s the diocese of Pittsburgh ordered St Michael's Church at Elizabeth, Pennsylvania padlocked at three o'clock in the morning, without warning to the congregation.

The only explanation offered was that the floor of the hundred and twenty five year old building was too weak and in danger of collapse.

Parishioners did not accept it, and the manner of the closure, in the middle of the night with no notice, is the reason the building has the reputation it now has.

Since then, changes are reported in the fabric of the church itself, and the coloured glass is what people point at.

Catholic parish closures across the Pennsylvania steel towns in this period took a great many churches from communities that had built them with their own money and their own hands. The anger in the accounts is real, and it did not need a ghost to produce it.
