Stucky's Bridge
Mississippi · United States · Execution site
He took travellers in for the night and they did not leave. When the district worked it out, they hanged him from the bridge over the ground where he had.
The story from Meridian, Mississippi is that in the 1800s a man named Stucky offered travellers a bed for the night, killed them while they slept, robbed them, and buried the bodies along the riverbank near his house.
When local people worked out what was happening, they hanged him from the bridge beside the riverbank where the graves were.
No record supports any of it. No trial, no name in the county papers, no bodies. It should be read as legend, and it belongs to a family of stories about murderous innkeepers that goes back centuries in Europe.
What is reported at the bridge is a lantern moving along the bank, and a figure.
Mississippi does have a documented case of this kind, the Harpe brothers and the outlaw stands along the Natchez Trace, which may be where the shape of it came from.
The bridge is on a rural road.
