The Surrency Light

Georgia · United States · Bridge

The light appears on a long abandoned stretch of track under a bridge on Highway 341. This town has a documented history for this sort of thing.

The Surrency Ghost Light is seen on an abandoned stretch of railway that runs low under a bridge on Highway 341 in Appling County, Georgia.

The story attached to it is told many ways. The most common has a husband and wife living beside the tracks, an argument one night, and the wife running blindly out of the house.

What makes this place unusual is that the town has a documented history for this. In the 1870s the home of A P Surrency, who the town is named for, was the subject of a disturbance case reported in newspapers across the country, with objects thrown, furniture moved and hundreds of people travelling to see it. It went on for years and was investigated by journalists at the time.

The house burned down. The light is a separate matter.

Railway lights of this kind are among the most investigated anomalies in the American south, and most turn out to be distant headlights bent by warm air over the rails. Some do not.

The site is beside a public road.
