The army built this airfield in Macon County, Alabama in 1941 to train Black pilots, at a time when the United States armed forces were segregated and the official position had been that Black men could not fly.

The Tuskegee Airmen proved otherwise, in Europe, at considerable cost.

Men were killed here learning. Training accidents killed more American airmen in the Second World War than most people realise, and a pilot in an unfamiliar aircraft over unfamiliar country had very little margin.

At night a faint explosion is heard, and parts of the now abandoned field produce other accounts.

The men who trained here came back to a country that still would not serve them in a restaurant, and their record is a large part of why the armed forces were desegregated in 1948.

The main field is a national historic site and is open.
