The twin cemeteries
Indiana · United States · Cemetery
Two burial grounds face each other across a road outside Rensselaer. The couple asked to be buried side by side. Their families put one on each side.
On a road just outside Rensselaer, Indiana there are two cemeteries, one on each side.
The legend is that a young couple, whose families were at odds, took their own lives together, and left instructions that they were to be buried side by side.
The families did not honour it. One was buried in each cemetery, across the road from the other.
That is the shape of the story and it is very old. Versions of it exist across Europe and North America, usually with two graves separated by a wall, a road or a churchyard boundary, and often with something growing across the gap.
No names attach to this one and no record supports it, which is normal for a legend of this type.
What gives it a hold here is the geography, because the two cemeteries genuinely are there, facing each other, and anybody driving that road can see the arrangement for themselves.
Both are public burial grounds.
