Pittamiglio Castle
Montevideo · Uruguay · House
Staircases end in walls and the rooms have no windows — and visitors say the alchemist follows them through the passages.
Guides and visitors at the Castillo Pittamiglio speak of a presence that seems to follow them through the narrow passages — as if the master of the house never finished his great work. The building is made to confuse: staircases that end abruptly in walls, windowless rooms, halls filled with alchemical, Templar and Masonic symbols. According to the most persistent rumours, the architect hid the Holy Grail itself somewhere in the masonry.
Humberto Pittamiglio was an architect and an alchemist, and over decades he rebuilt his house on the Rambla Gandhi in Montevideo into the labyrinth it is today. The castle is now a museum and one of the city's most enigmatic buildings — nobody has found what he hid.
