A priest in Vågan owned the black book, and when the maid accidentally read him loose, the devil was set to work. The priest ordered him to take a vessel and fetch winter wood from the Innlandet, everything he cut. But the brushwood made the load so high and heavy that he lay struggling inside Skrovoddane for several days with stinging hands. At last he abandoned the vessel and came complaining to the priest, who conjured him down through an awl-hole in the floor.
