The Acorn Warden of the Anninger
Niederösterreich · Østerrike · Forest
The spirit guarded the oak for three days to win the girl — but a squirrel ate the acorns. Ever since, the Acorn Warden rages.
On the Anninger near Mödling, and on the neighbouring Hühnerberg, a giant spirit makes its home. He shows himself in human shape when the mood takes him, and the people of the district call him Eichelwart, the acorn warden. He earned the mocking name after carrying off a girl. She promised him her love on one condition: that for three days he could guard the oak without losing a single acorn. The spirit took up his post beneath the tree with delight and chased off every human who came near — while up in the crown a squirrel ate acorn after acorn. The girl went free. Ever since, the Acorn Warden has raged in fury over the one he lost, doing now good and now harm to those he meets; more than one local has had a tale to tell of him.
