The White Lady of the Theresianum
Wien · Østerrike · Palace
The white lady stepped in to a fevered pupil — he died soon after. The gatekeeper who merely glimpsed her fell into nervous fever himself.
The white lady of Vienna did not confine herself to the Hofburg's guard corridor. Gustav Gugitz's collection of legends records that she once appeared in the Theresianum, the academy for young nobles on the Wieden. A pupil of old noble family lay there sick with scarlet fever when the figure entered his room. Shortly afterwards the boy was dead. The gatekeeper, who saw no more than her flitting past in the corridor, was himself struck down with nervous fever by the sight. In Viennese tradition the white lady is no avenger but a herald of death — she appears before someone in the house dies, and there is no bargaining with her. The Theresianum was founded in 1746 by Maria Theresa in the old Favorita palace and still houses a school and a diplomatic academy.
