Toowong Cemetery
Queensland · Australia · Cemetery
At Queensland's largest cemetery, cars roll uphill by themselves at Spook Hill — and a vampire beauty is said to rest in Avenue 12.
Brisbane's Toowong Cemetery opened in the 1870s and spreads across 44 hilly hectares holding over a hundred thousand graves. Most famous is Spook Hill, a slope where cars are said to roll toward the grave of two sisters — killed, the story goes, in a car accident and still hostile to motor vehicles to this day. Avenue 12 has its tale of a 19th-century vampire beauty who prowls among the headstones at night, while others describe a hissing figure dubbed the Angel of Death. Even boxing legend Peter Jackson is said to appear by his grave, fists raised for one final round.
