Countess Berthe was murdered on her wedding night – her ghost is still said to appear on the ramparts of this Ardennes ruin.

High above the river Ourthe stand the ruins of the medieval castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne. Legend tells that in the 10th century the count's daughter Berthe was promised to the winner of a tournament, but the unknown knight who triumphed turned out to be a jealous rival in disguise, said to have made a pact with the devil. On the wedding night Berthe was murdered and her body thrown into the moat. Ever since, her ghost is said to walk the ramparts, and the legend is so alive that the castle still stages appearances of 'Berthe's ghost' for visitors on summer evenings. The ruin's steep stairs and dark vaults make the story easy to believe.
