Beersel Castle
Flandern – Vlaams-Brabant · Belgia · Castle
The ghosts of this medieval fortress are said to appear only when dark times threaten the country – an omen of troubles to come.
Beersel Castle, just south of Brussels, is one of Belgium's best-preserved medieval strongholds, built in the 14th century in marshland with a wide moat and three heavy brick towers. It has survived sieges, wars and famine, and tradition holds that the memories linger in its walls: the ghosts here are said to show themselves only in troubled times, as an omen that hardship awaits the region or the nation. Visitors also tell of a white lady who wanders at night near the spot where she died, and an older tale speaks of a devil chained in the cellars. The castle is open to the public today, its narrow spiral stairs and dark chambers keeping the Middle Ages unnervingly close.
