Late one autumn evening there was a knock at the outer door while the wife cooked porridge. The man confessed he had pledged himself to the devil, and when at last he went out, the wife saw by the cottage light a fine gentleman standing there. She never saw her husband again; in the morning she found only a great splash of blood.
