Malexander church
Östergötland · Sverige · Kyrka · Skrekk 3/5
Trolls tore down the building each night until twin heifers chose the spot — by the shore of Lake Sommen.
A church site recorded in 1345; the medieval church (visited by St Birgitta) burned in 1587, the present one 1881. The legend: the church was to be built at Ormsjötorp, but 'evil powers'/trolls tore the work down each night. So a pair of twin heifers with a sledge were loosed, and it was built where they stopped. Another legend: Malexander folk stole one of Asby's church bells and carried it across Sommen. [History documented; the troll and bell legends are recorded folklore.]
