Since 1892, the Stone Woman in white with glowing red eyes has appeared on the stairway of the Maya pyramid El Castillo.

This Maya city near the Guatemalan border was a ceremonial centre of the Late Classic period, around AD 700–900, crowned by the forty-metre pyramid El Castillo. The very name Xunantunich means "stone woman" — after the ghost that gave the ruin its reputation. The first encounter was reported in 1892, when a hunter saw a woman dressed entirely in white with glowing red eyes at the foot of the pyramid; she climbed the stone stairs and vanished straight into the wall. She has been seen again and again since, and many believe she is a sacrifice victim forever reliving her final walk to the altar at the summit.
