Fort Henry

On Fort Henry's ramparts still patrols Nils von Schoultz, the rebel hanged in 1838 after being defended by a future prime minister.
The massive 1830s fortress above Kingston carries a grim record of executions and brutal punishments. Its most famous prisoner was Nils von Schoultz, a Finnish adventurer who joined the 1838 rebellion and was hanged that December — defended in court by a young John A. Macdonald, Canada's future first prime minister. Von Schoultz is said to stroll the parapets in a tattered uniform and shift objects in the commander's rooms. Visitors also report glimpses of blue-coated soldiers on the parade square, where men once dropped dead during punishment drills in sweltering wool coats.
