The Ghost Ship of Northumberland Strait
Prince Edward Island · Canada · Haunted site
Since 1786, a burning three-master has been seen sailing the Northumberland Strait — and those who row out to save her crew find only empty sea.
In the strait between Prince Edward Island and the mainland, seafarers have reported the same vision for over 200 years: a handsome schooner under white sail that suddenly erupts in flames. In 1900, sailors rowed out from Charlottetown Harbour to rescue the burning crew — only to watch the ship dissolve before their eyes. The vessel appears most often between September and November and is said to foretell a northeast gale. Scientists have offered everything from St. Elmo's fire to moonlit fog banks, but the strait's flaming phantom sails on through the stories.
