In hockey's shrine lingers bank teller Dorothy, who shot herself in the vault in 1953 after a doomed love affair.

The Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto occupies an ornate former Bank of Montreal building from 1885, and the museum's most famous figure never played hockey. On 11 March 1953, 19-year-old bank teller Dorothea "Dorothy" Mae Elliott shot herself in the bank's vault after what is said to have been a doomed affair with a married colleague, dying the next day. Staff and visitors have since described flickering lights, doors opening on their own, cold spots, and a woman's moans and footsteps echoing through the building. Dorothy's story was confirmed decades later in newspaper archives — the ghost reports had begun before anyone knew who she was.
