Montmorency Falls – The White Lady

Québec · Kanada · Natural site

In the dawn mist at Montmorency Falls appears Mathilde, the bride who leapt from the falls when war took her beloved.

Montmorency Falls outside Québec City stands taller than Niagara, and in the spray at its base the White Lady is said to appear at dawn. The legend tells of Mathilde and her fiancé Louis, due to marry in the summer of 1759 — but Louis fell in the Battle of Montmorency on 31 July, when the British attacked the French lines at Beauport. Inconsolable, Mathilde put on her wedding dress and threw herself over the falls. Those who have seen her describe a figure seemingly woven from fine droplets of water, like a white dress fluttering above the cataract. A section of the falls is still called the Chute de la Dame Blanche.
