Devil's Bridge in the Schöllenen Gorge — Uri · Sveits · Bridge

The Devil built the bridge across the Schöllenen Gorge – and, cheated of his soul, tried to smash it with a giant boulder.

Where the Reuss thunders through the Schöllenen Gorge no human builder could span a bridge, so the people of Uri, legend says, struck a pact with the Devil: he would get the soul of the first to cross. The Devil built the bridge, but the cunning Urners drove a billy goat over as the first offering. Furious at being cheated, the Devil fetched an enormous boulder to smash his work, but was stopped by an old woman who had carved a cross into the stone. The Teufelsstein still lies near Göschenen today, and a fiery red devil painted on the cliff face watches over the crossing.
