Cave of Quicaví

Los Lagos · Chile · Natural site

In the cave at Quicaví, Chiloé's secret council of warlocks held court, guarded by the deformed creature known as the imbunche.

The village of Quicaví on Chiloé's east coast is counted as the capital of the islands' witchcraft tradition. In a cave nearby, known as the Casa Grande, the warlock society Recta Provincia is said to have held its councils – a secret parallel government dispensing its own justice across the archipelago. Legend has it the entrance is guarded by an imbunche, a child deformed through dark rituals to serve as its keeper. The 1880 trial against the society's leaders is historical fact, and night tours still search for the cave's hidden mouth.
