The Dongyue Temple outside Chaoyangmen, founded in the 14th century for the god of Mount Tai, is the underworld's civil service on earth. Along its galleries stretch the seventy-six bureaus of the netherworld – the Department of Life and Death, the Department of Untimely Death, the Department of Retribution – staffed by 716 life-size judges, clerks and demons moulded in clay with staring glass eyes. By the gate hang two great iron abacuses inscribed with the promise that the reckoning 'errs not by a single hair': here, folk belief holds, every person's deeds are totted up for judgement. The temple has long been called the most yin-charged spot in Beijing. Visitors swear the judges' eyes follow them through the halls, and that certain statues seem to have shifted their pose by the time one passes them on the way back out.
