The narrow lane of Luosi Jieding in Yangzhou's old town is also called the Alley Without Lamps, for it has been held impossible for centuries to keep a light burning here. The alley's name is said to be a corruption of the words "corpses stacked to the rooftops", a memory of the city's fall in 1645, and legend has it that the breath of the dead extinguishes every flame lit in their darkness. Residents never hung lanterns, still hurry silently through after nightfall, and teach their children not to call each other's names there — whoever is called may bring something home.
