On Cartagena's highest hill a friar hurled the devil-goat off the cliff – but the mountain never quite got rid of it.

The convent of 1607 crowns Cerro de la Popa, the hill watching over Cartagena. According to legend, locals once worshipped a demon in the shape of a goat here, until friar Alonso de la Cruz Paredes hurled the beast off the precipice – a drop known ever since as El Salto del Cabrón, the Goat's Leap. Yet the tales insist evil never fully left the hill: a condemned friar who sold his soul is still said to roam the heights. At night, visitors speak of shadows and footsteps in the cloister walks.
