Konopiste Chateau

The robbers tortured the daughter to learn where the gold lay. She died without telling — and still walks as a white lady.

Konopiste began as a gothic castle and ended as an archducal hunting seat with parkland and a lake. The legend children in the region have heard for generations concerns an early lord of the castle, a generous and wealthy man whose greatest pleasure was riding to hounds in his own forests. When a band of robbers settled in those same forests he carried off all his gold and hid it in various places in the cellar vaults, telling only his beloved daughter. The robbers seized her and pressed her under torture for the hiding places. She said nothing, and in the end they killed her. Since then the bila pani, the white lady, is said to walk the chateau park at night, guarding the secret of a treasure nobody has yet found beneath Konopiste.
