Loretanske Square (Drahomira's Fall)

Prag · Tsjekkia · Urban site

The ground opened and swallowed the princess with carriage and horses. On stormy nights Drahomira drives back up, crying: it will go badly!

On Loretanske Square the pagan princess Drahomira is said to have vanished straight into the earth. The legend tells that she drove out from the castle and passed the church of St Matthew just as the bell rang for the elevation. Her coachman, a Christian, reined in the horses and ran inside to kneel. Enraged, the princess began to curse the Christians — and in that instant a crash went through the square, the ground opened and swallowed her with carriage, coachman and horses. People remembered her as the woman behind the murder of her mother-in-law Ludmila. Tradition says that on stormy nights she rises again from the abyss in a burning carriage drawn by horses throwing sparks, sitting in the driver's seat, wringing her hands and crying: bude zle — it will go badly.
