A Turkish merchant walks the old customs yard at night. In his hand he carries the head of the girl who did not wait for him.

Ungelt was the king's customs yard, where merchants from across Europe and the Orient brought their goods. The legend tells of an innkeeper's daughter who had turned down every suitor until a young Turkish merchant arrived with his caravan — and then fell at once. He had to sail home; she promised to wait, but the years passed and a neighbour talked her into a wedding. On the wedding day itself the Turk returned and sent word that she should meet him at their old place. She was never seen alive again. He struck off her head and buried the body in the cellar. After his own death he is said to walk the Ungelt courtyards and the lanes around the Tyn Church, slow and silent, the girl's head in his hand.
