Beneath the Parochialkirche on Klosterstraße hides Berlin's eeriest cellar: an extensive Baroque crypt where the city's distinguished families had themselves buried from the late 17th century. The vault's ingenious ventilation system, with small shafts linking the chambers, had an unintended effect – the roughly 560 people interred there slowly dried into mummies in their coffins. When the chambers were opened and examined, 87 preserved mummies were found in 110 coffins, frozen in their shrouds for three centuries. The 25 original doors to the burial chambers, fitted when the church was built, form Europe's largest surviving set of Baroque crypt doors. The church was badly ravaged in the war and the carillon in the rebuilt tower rings out over the quarter again – but it is in the dark beneath the floor that the Parochialkirche's true congregation resides.
