Countess Cosel was held prisoner on the basalt fortress for 49 years until her death in 1765 – and is said to wander there still as a figure in white.
On a basalt crag east of Dresden stands Burg Stolpen, scene of one of Saxony's most tragic fates. Countess Anna Constantia von Cosel, mistress of Augustus the Strong, knew too many state secrets and was brought to the castle at Christmas 1716. She never left – after 49 years of captivity she died in 1765, aged 84, alone and abandoned. According to local legend she has never left Stolpen: visitors tell of a white female figure in the Johannisturm, popularly known as the Cosel Tower, and of footsteps in the dark passages. Her grave can still be seen in the castle chapel today.
