Witches' Kitchen of Tecklenburg

Nordrhein-Westfalen · Tyskland · Natural site

At the Hexenküche rock formation near Tecklenburg, the devil is said to have left a hoofprint in the stone – still visible today.

Just outside the medieval hilltop town of Tecklenburg in the Teutoburg Forest lies the rock formation known as the Hexenküche, the 'witches' kitchen'. According to legend, the witches of the region gathered here at night to brew their potions – and the devil himself visited the spot. In rage, or in another version in pain, he stamped so hard that his hoof burned a print into the sandstone, a mark visitors can still seek out among the rocks. The site's rugged boulders and dark crevices made it an early magnet for tales of sorcery, and to this day the Hexenküche remains one of the Münsterland's most legend-rich natural places.
