The Countess of Bagsværd lost her castle to flames in 1909 and took poison in 1914 — evening walkers say she still stands in the ruin's empty window openings.

At the forest edge by Bagsværd Sø stand the white ruin walls of Aldershvile, and evening walkers report again and again a sorrowful presence among the empty window openings — as though the countess never left her burnt castle. Her name was Angelica Pierri, born into poverty in 1870, heir to a diamond-mine fortune through her second husband and holder of a countess's title through her third; local tongues named her the Countess of Bagsværd. She insisted the estate be called a castle and lived there in extravagant luxury until the building was swallowed by flames one night in 1909, probably set deliberately according to the inquiry. The fire ruined her. In 1914 she took her own life with poison. Since then the ruin has stood in the park as an eerie memorial to a woman who managed to lose everything twice.
