The palace died of shame, people said — no one would live in the house after the queen and Struensee's doomed summer, and shadows still linger among the avenues.

On an islet in Hørsholm only a church stands today where one of Europe's most magnificent palaces once rose — and popular tradition has an explanation for its disappearance: Hirschholm died of shame. In the summer of 1771 Queen Caroline Mathilde moved here with her lover, the royal physician Struensee, who then ruled the kingdom in place of the mad Christian VII. During the infamous Hirschholm Summer the queen gave birth to a daughter, Louise Augusta — officially the king's child, in everyone's eyes Struensee's. The following spring Struensee was overthrown and executed; the queen was banished and died soon after. The palace then stood abandoned, as if no one dared touch it, until in 1810 it was ordered demolished. Among the avenues of the park, those who walk there at dusk say the shadows of that doomed summer never left the island.
