A curse is said to have lain over Hald since the king had Niels Bugge murdered in 1358 — five castles have risen by the same lake, and all five lie abandoned.

A curse is said to have lain over Hald Sø since 1358, the year the king had Niels Bugge killed. Bugge was the most powerful Jutish magnate of the fourteenth century, by turns Valdemar Atterdag's ally and his most dangerous opponent; in 1346 he bought the land by the lake and built a castle there, and archaeologists have found oak posts felled in the winter of 1347–48 two metres beneath the present ruin's courtyard. After the murder, things went badly for each owner in turn. At least three folk ballads sing of Bugge, one of them of his death, and the legends about him live on in the district. The castle passed to a son-in-law who defended it in vain against Atterdag's siege in 1372, and in 1393 Margrete I gave it to Viborg cathedral with orders to tear it down and reuse the stone. Five abandoned castle sites now lie by the lake.
