Rold Forest is Denmark's largest continuous woodland, and for almost two hundred years it was outlaw country. The Robbers of Rold were people who had narrowly escaped the gallows, the whip or the branding iron, and had taken to the bogs, woods and heath where no bailiff followed. Their best-known hideout is Røverstuen, a hollow in the ground near Rebild Bakker. Legend tells how they strung cords across the road and down into the pit, where silver bells rang the moment a traveller passed overhead. Then they came up out of the earth. Locals still say the shadows sweeping through the beech wood when the wind rises are robber souls, and that charcoal burners, smugglers and cunning women walked the same paths. The darkness here is old and well populated.
