At night someone paces out the old castle's land — and the bridge collapsed under the demolition crew the day they came for the last of it.

Fifteen kilometres north of Tønder the remains of a Renaissance castle stand in the middle of a water-filled moat. The first Trøjborg was raised in the 1200s; in 1407 Margaret I bought it from the Limbek family as part of her effort to bind Southern Jutland to Denmark. In the 1580s Peter Rantzau tore down the old fortress and built a new castle on the enlarged islet. In 1854 the building was sold for demolition after the state refused to take it over. Legend says the parts still standing survived because the bridge collapsed under the demolition work — as if the site refused to give up any more. And at night, it is said, a restless figure walks about measuring out the old castle's land, again and again, as though the boundaries were never truly settled. The moat lies still around what is left.
