Guayaquil's grand cemetery of 1843, called the white city of the dead, climbs Cerro del Carmen with marble angels and stately mausoleums. Here, according to legend, La Dama Tapada leads her victims: an elegant woman in colonial dress and veil who on new-moon nights seduces night wanderers with an intoxicating scent. Whoever lifts the veil meets a rotting face with eyes glowing like coals. The cemetery's statues are also said to stir at dusk, and its legends have made it the centre of the city's dark-tourism trail.
