The Liceu opera house, opened in 1847 on land where a convent once stood, seems to haunt itself. On 9 April 1861 the auditorium burned down, and legend holds that a note was found in the rubble reading 'I am an owl and go alone – if you raise it again, I will burn it again'. The theatre was rebuilt, and in 1893 the anarchist Santiago Salvador hurled two bombs into the stalls on the season's opening night of William Tell; some twenty operagoers died in their seats. In 1994 the house burned down once more. Barcelonans have long spoken of the Liceu curse, and staff describe unseen presences in the corridors behind the boxes – as if all who burned and bled there never left the performance.
