At Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran, where Barcelona's Roman wall still rises beneath the chapel of Santa Àgata, folk tradition places one of the city's strangest doorways: an ancient well said to lead down to the realm of the dead. In Catalan folklore Pere Botero is the devil who boils sinners in his enormous cauldron, and legend has him hosting banquets in the well's depths, where damned souls descend never to return. The tale belongs to the bundle of medieval stories that have made this corner of the old town a favourite of night tours: wails are said to have risen from the ground here, and the heat of the cauldron to be felt through the paving stones.
