Sagrat Cor de Jesús (Sant Martí de Provençals)
Barcelona · Spania · Kyrka · Skrekk 3/5
When the parish graveyard was levelled, many of the dead were left in the ground – and by neighbourhood legend the orphaned dead still crawl beneath the grass, lamenting.
Around the church of Sant Martí de Provençals, one of Barcelona's oldest parish cores, lay for centuries a graveyard where generations of farmers from the plain were laid to rest. As the city grew, the burial ground was demolished in the 1940s – but by stubborn neighbourhood legend, far from all the graves were moved. The dead who remained were robbed of their consecrated ground, and ever since, locals say the 'orphaned dead' stir beneath the earth around the church: a dull scraping under the lawns, moaning sounds at dusk, and cold currents drifting across the old graveyard's surface. For generations the neighbourhood children have dared one another to stand on the spot after dark and listen for those who were never carried to a new grave.
