Madrileños call the stairwell the city's cursed house — three generations of murder have stacked up behind the same door in Malasaña.

Madrileños call it la casa maldita, the cursed house, and the address is a fixture on the neighbourhood's mystery walks. What has accumulated behind that door is hard to explain away: in 1945 Felipe de la Braña was found dead in his flat with a tuft of hair in his hand, thought to belong to a killer who was never caught. In May 1962 the tailor José María Ruiz Martínez killed his wife and their five children in the stairwell before taking his own life. And in 1964 a woman hid her murdered newborn in a chest of drawers in the same building.

The house still stands at Antonio Grilo 3 in Malasaña, an ordinary Madrid building on an ordinary street, and in 2020 it gave the horror film Malasaña 32 its material.
