House of the Bélmez Faces

Andalusien · Spania · House

In 1971 a face rose out of the cement floor of María Gómez's kitchen – and new faces kept appearing for decades.

On 23 August 1971, housewife María Gómez Cámara noticed a stain on her kitchen floor resembling a human face. The floor was torn up and re-laid – but the face returned, followed by others: men, women and small visages that seemed to be born, age and change expression in the cement. The Bélmez Faces became Spain's most debated paranormal phenomenon of the twentieth century; parapsychologists spoke of teleplasty while sceptics alleged fraud with chemicals. The house stands in the small village of Bélmez de la Moraleda in Jaén, and since María's death in 2004 the faces are said to be slowly fading.
