The Vallecas Case House

Madrid · Spania · Haunted house

After teenager Estefanía's death in 1991, police filed Spain's only report acknowledging unexplained phenomena in her family's flat.

In an unremarkable flat on Calle Luis Marín in Madrid's Vallecas district, 17-year-old Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro died in 1991, shortly after a ouija session at school. Her family was then tormented by bangs, shadows and objects moving on their own, and in the early hours of 27 November 1992 police officers wrote a report describing phenomena with no natural explanation – the only such document known in Spain. The story became famous as the Vallecas Case and inspired the horror film Verónica. The building still stands, drawing the curious to an otherwise ordinary neighbourhood, though later investigations have pointed to neighbourhood pranks and media frenzy.
