After the 1892 double murder, when the thieves also hanged a cat from a beam, this 15th-century Segovia palace became simply the House of Crime.

The late-Gothic Ayala Berganza palace below Segovia's old town earned its nickname one May night in 1892, when three burglars strangled the owner, city councillor Alejandro Bahín, and his young maidservant. As a macabre signature the killers also hanged a cat from one of the ceiling beams, and the deed went down as Segovia's most infamous crime – the house has been called La Casa del Crimen, the House of Crime, ever since. The palace is now a hotel, but staff and guests report weeping and unexplained sounds around the staircase where Bahín's body was found, with room 101 singled out in particular. The case featured on the TV programme Cuarto Milenio, which spread the house's reputation across Spain.
