The caretaker who lived alone in Villa Winter has described unexplained night-time sounds in the house and calls it, plainly, the house of horror. Around the villa flourish legends few places in Spain can match: signals to German submarines offshore, fleeing Nazi officers, and a cellar room said to have been an operating theatre where wanted men were given new faces — claims historians have never been able to substantiate.

The German engineer Gustav Winter raised the house after the Second World War behind the mountains at the desolate beach of Cofete on Fuerteventura, with a tower, thick walls, cellar vaults and walled-up doors. In 1945 Winter was on the Allied blacklist of suspected German agents.
