In the Bay of the Dead, the souls of the drowned await the night boat that will carry them to the other side.

The Baie des Trépassés — Bay of the Dead — lies wedged between the Pointe du Raz and the Pointe du Van at the far western tip of Brittany. Sea currents once washed the bodies of shipwrecked sailors ashore here, and legend holds that the souls of the drowned gather in the bay waiting for the Bag Noz, the night boat of the dead, to ferry them out to the Île de Sein. In Breton the place is called Bae an Anaon, the bay of suffering souls, and an older tradition has the remains of druids shipped from here to their final rest. Today it is a dramatically beautiful surf beach — but the name and the legends linger.
