Château de Puilaurens

On the dizzying ramparts of this Cathar castle, Blanche de Bourbon, the murdered child queen, is said to walk on moonlit nights.

The Cathar castle of Puilaurens clings to a rocky crest at nearly 700 metres in the Aude, and one of its towers bears the name of the White Lady's Tower. Tradition tells that Blanche de Bourbon, kinswoman of Philip the Fair, rested here in 1353 on her way to her ill-fated marriage to Peter the Cruel of Castile. Eight years later her husband had the queen murdered at just 22. Ever since, her white figure is said to appear on clear nights, walking slowly along the rampart path with her gaze fixed on the horizon – as if still searching for the way home.
