The castle of Les Baux is carved from a white limestone massif in the Alpilles and was the seat of one of Provence's proudest dynasties, who claimed descent from the magus Balthasar and bore the Star of Bethlehem on their arms. Around the ruins lives the legend of la Chèvre d'Or, the golden goat: a shimmering creature guarding a treasure hidden in the mountain's hollows, revealing itself only to the chosen – while those who follow her out of greed are led to their doom. The site's bloody history, including the cruel Raymond de Turenne who forced prisoners to leap from the cliff edge, has given the rock a doubly dark reputation.
